Mass Balance Calculator
Quickly calculate material input and output balances in chemical processes. Optimize flows in your business or project.
Calculate Mass Balance
By default, the sum of two input streams is calculated as a single output stream. For more complex scenarios, it is recommended to use detailed engineering software.
What is Mass Balance?
Mass balance , is based on the principle of conservation of mass in a system. According to this principle, mass cannot be created or destroyed in a system. Simply put, the total mass entering a process system must equal the total mass leaving the system. This is a fundamental tool for designing, analyzing and optimizing processes in chemical engineering.
Mass balances are commonly used in continuous flow processes, batch processes, and semi-batch processes. Mass balances can be written for each component in a system, either individually or for the total mass, whether reactions are taking place or not.
How to Calculate Mass Balance?
The simplest mass balance equation is:
Input Mass = Output Mass + Accumulation
In steady-state systems (systems that do not change with time), the accumulation term is assumed to be zero. In this case, the equation simplifies to:
Input Mass = Output Mass
Our calculator uses this basic principle to produce the sum of two given input streams as a combined output stream. This can be used in simple mixing or reactionless separation processes.
Application Areas:
- Monitoring reactant and product flows in chemical reactors.
- Establishment of component balances in separation units (distillation columns, absorption towers).
- Determination of pollutant loads in wastewater treatment plants.
- Calculation of fuel and flue gas flows in energy production systems.
- In overall process design and optimization.
This calculator is a simple tool for applying basic mass balance principles. Real industrial processes often involve multiple input/output streams, reactions, and balances of different components. More complex scenarios require detailed process simulation software and engineering expertise.
