Information About Yarn Count Systems

Yarn count is an important property that expresses the fineness or thickness of the yarn in textiles. Yarn count is usually expressed according to the weight of a given length of yarn (direct systems) or the length of a given weight (indirect systems).

Yarn count is a critical parameter in the production processes (spinning, weaving, knitting), quality control and determining the final product properties. Choosing the right yarn count has a great impact on the strength, handle and overall performance of the fabric.

Direct Yarn Count Systems (Fixed Length, Variable Weight)

  • Tex: The weight of 1000 meters of yarn in grams. The higher the Tex number, the thicker the yarn. (g/1000m) Tex = (Weight (g) / Length (km))
  • Denier: Weight of 9000 meters of yarn in grams. Usually used in filament (synthetic) yarns. The higher the denier, the thicker the yarn. (g/9000m) Denier = (Weight (g) / Length (km)) * 9
  • dTex (decitex): Weight of 10,000 meters of yarn in grams. Used for more precise measurements. (g/10000m) dTex = (Weight (g) / Length (km)) * 10

Indirect Yarn Count Systems (Fixed Weight, Variable Length)

  • Ne (English Cotton Count): It is expressed in the number of 840 yards of yarn weighing 1 pound. The higher the count, the finer the yarn. It is usually used in cotton yarns. (skein/lb) Ne = (Length (yards) / 840) / Weight (lb)
  • Nm (Metric Number): The length of a yarn weighing 1 gram in meters. The higher the Nm number, the thinner the yarn becomes. It is usually used in wool and synthetic yarns. (m/g) Nm = Length (m) / Weight (g)
