Calculate BMI

What is BMI and Why is it Important?

**Body Mass Index (BMI)** is a simple measurement that shows whether a person's weight is in a healthy range for their height. It is a health indicator developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is widely used for adults. BMI does not directly measure factors such as fat percentage and muscle mass, but it provides a general classification.

BMI is a critical tool for quickly determining whether individuals are overweight or underweight and for assessing potential health risks. A high BMI can increase the risk of conditions commonly associated with obesity, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure, while a very low BMI can also indicate certain health problems.

How to Calculate BMI?

BMI calculation is quite simple and is done with the following formula:

BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]²

For example, for a person weighing 70 kg and 1.75 meters tall, the BMI calculation is as follows:

  • Height (m) = 175 cm / 100 = 1.75 m
  • Square length (m²) = 1.75 * 1.75 = 3.0625 m²
  • BMI = 70 kg / 3.0625 m² = 22.86

How to Interpret BMI Values?

The standard BMI categories determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) are as follows:

BMI Value Weight Category
Below 18.5 Weak
18.5 - 24.9 Normal Weight
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight
30.0 - 34.9 Obese (Class I)
35.0 - 39.9 Obese (Class II)
40.0 and Above Extremely Obese (Class III)

It should be noted that BMI is a general indicator and can be misleading in some special cases, such as athletes with high muscle mass or the elderly. It is always important to consult a health professional for the most accurate health assessment.
